White on Kraft Congrats Card

Sometimes when I flip through the Paper Source catalog, I see products that inspire cards. I can't find what I originally saw on the Paper Source site anymore, but it was basically a white on kraft design.

The card is super simple, just white embossing on kraft cardstock. The result pops, although I'd forgotten to use the powder tool on the cardstock, so the white embossing could've been cleaner.

SUPPLIES:

Paper: Paper Source paper bag cover stock
Stamps: Papertrey Ink In Bloom, Congrats All Ways
Tools: White embossing powder from Jo-Ann
Ink: Tsukineko Versamark clear pigment ink

Do you got embossing powder?

I got a stamp set in the mail the other week, and was letting Evie look at it when she asked me, "Do you got embossing powder?" I thought it was amusing enough to share with Greg that she asked me about such a specific crafting product (this was over IM):

Me: She just asked me if I have embossing powder. Heh. She's looking at a stamp set.
Greg: No way. How many 3-year-olds know what embossing powder is? Sigh. Poor Evie.
Me: Why poor Evie? I think it's from the craft videos.
Greg: Ha. Yeah, I know, I'm just kidding about poor Evie, mostly like saying she's being corrupted. Although if she did like crafting, what a good environment to do it. She could be a crafting prodigy!
Me: Heh. That's not a thing.
Greg: Not until now. She's gonna make Tim Holtz look like a chump. In a world of Crop-a-Diles, she'll be a Crop-a-T-Rex.

Ha! Crop-a-T-Rex. I think she picked up embossing powder from watching Jennifer McGuire and Kristina Werner craft videos. She's watched their videos so often that I now just ask her, "Jennifer or Kristina?"

Unrelated to Evie crafting, but here she is playing in between the door and the security door (because she wanted to), making faces at the camera, which she likes to do as of late rather than giving a nice smile:

Retro Sketches 161 White-on-White Conversation Bubble Card

This card came together pretty quickly and it coincidentally worked with this week's Retro Sketch #161. I knew I wanted a clean-and-simple card with a diagonal element, so this fit the bill.

Parker at 2 Months Old

Parker turned two months a little over a couple of weeks ago, but I've been a bit slow getting this post up.

In the Baby Bjorn. I've really liked having it to keep my hands free since he wants to be up and looking around now that he's more awake and alert during the day. No more most-of-day sleeping like when he was a newborn (though that's not to say he doesn't still sleep a fair amount).

Alert and in a good mood.

Right after we tried him out in the Bumbo. Still a little young for the Bumbo.

Greg had an eye exam and got his eyes dilated, so they gave him these shades to tuck into his glasses. Greg just wore his prescription sunglasses instead, but I put these on Parker while he was sleeping. Ha. I feel like he looks like a tiny little old man.

Couple of selfies while we were chillin' at Arizona Inn during a weekend in Tucson. At this age, Parker indiscriminately grabs anything within reach, including Evie's hair laying next to his hand. A couple of times, Evie said, "Baby Parker, stop grabbing my hair!" It made me laugh because I suspect it won't be the last time there will be hair grabbing.

  • Got his second newborn blood screen at just over six weeks, because I forgot to get it done in his first two weeks. Oops.
  • Was about 12.5 lbs at his two month appointment. Also got a little silver nitrate in his belly button, since (for whatever reason, I don't know) his belly button hadn't completely healed when his stump fell off.
  • Started to consistently coo and smile in response to us playing with him between six and seven weeks.
  • At about 7.5 weeks, he woke up to eat at about 1:30 am after finally falling asleep at 9:30ish, and then didn't wake up again until about 6:30 am. Another night, it took me from 8:00 to 10:00 to get him to sleep (gah), but then he didn't wake up again until 4:00 am. The couple weeks or so, he's settled into a schedule of going down to be around 8:30 or 9:00, waking up around 2:00 am, and then waking up again around 6:00 am. Not bad.
  • I've been using the Baby Bjorn to carry Parker around daily and he inevitably falls asleep in it. Sometimes he laughs in his sleep and I can feel it when I'm carrying him around and it's funny.

Wish Ball 2015 Photo Booth

Greg and I went to a (work) event last Saturday where they had a free photo booth . . yes, please!

Wish Ball Photo Booth | shirley shirley bo birley Blog

We always do the same few poses (there can't be that many photo booth poses to begin with . . .), which consists of serious, silly, kissing, and props.

These will definitely be scrapbooked (sans tacky frame/background/logo and junk though).

Monthly Baby Photo Onesie Badges

I'm up on the Whisker Graphics blog today with my project this month - onesie badges for monthly baby photos.

Before Evie came, a co-worker gave me a set of monthly onesie stickers from Etsy for taking monthly photos (see Evie's monthly photos). I did a bit of searching on Etsy for baby boy monthly onesie stickers after Parker came, but ultimately decided that I could make my own.

I ended up making my own with my Silhouette and Whisker Graphics Middy Bitty Bags and solid Divine Twine:

INSTRUCTIONS:

(from left to right, top to bottom)
1-3. Using the Silhouette, cut 4" circles, numbers 1 through 12, and elephants.
4-6. Trim Middy Bitty Bags tall enough to cover 4" circle. Deconstruct at the seams.

(from left to right, top to bottom)
7-8. Adhere circles to backside of Middy Bitty Bags and trim the excess down around the circles.
9-10. Cover numbers with adhesive (I used Scrappy Tape). Cover each number with rows of solid Divine Twine and trim the excess from the edges.
11. Line the elephants' ears with solid Divine Twine. I cut down Scrappy Tape to fit the ears, laid Divine Twine over the Scrappy Tape, and adhered the pieces behind the ears. Adhere elephants to smaller punched circles.
12. Adhere the twine-covered numbers and the elephants to covered 4" circles.

Six Baby Basics

Now that we're on baby #2, there are some things from the first time around that I continue to use this time, along with a couple of new things this time around. This isn't an exhaustive list of all the baby items we use, but many of the ones that I've found most useful.

Six Baby Basics | shirley shirley bo birley Blog

ONE | Patemm Diaper Changing Pad
When we had Evie, a friend gifted us a Patemm changing pad (specifically, the Manhattan Momma Black & White pictured above). At the time, before I started to use it, my thought was that it was just another changing pad (and a bit of a pricey one at that), of which we had several. After I started to use it though, I shelved every other changing pad in favor of this one, particularly for diaper changes while we are out. The laminated cotton makes it easy to wipe clean and most importantly, since it's nice and big, it keeps messy diapers with flailing/rolling babies contained well. (I've changed many diapers in the car, where I'm most afraid of the mess escaping). The customer service of the company is good too - the binding on the original one started to unravel and I contacted the company to ask if it was something that could be fixed. I sent it back to them and then ended up just sending me a new one.

TWO | Cloth Diapers with Absorbent Padding
I've found cloth diapers with absorbent padding down the center to be my preferred burp cloths (I don't actually use these for diapers). I like the ones with the added absorbent padding given how much babies can sometimes spit up. We have a few plain ones that we use in a pinch, but for the most part, I use these burp clothes that I sewed before Evie came. The extra fabric on the cloth diaper makes it just a bit thicker, which is a good thing.

THREE | Summer Infant Swaddleme Swaddler
When we first had Evie, I tried swaddling her with receiving blankets and that didn't work very well because she wiggled out of it like nothing. I felt like it also took more effort to get her swaddled with just a blanket. We got these swaddlers and they worked better for actually keeping her swaddled (though the older they get, the better they are at wiggling out of everything). It was faster to get her swaddled to begin with, which was especially important to me in the middle of the night when I don't want to wake them up any more than I have to. With Parker, I tried to use a swaddler right off the bat and he didn't like it at first, so I thought that they wouldn't work for him at all. I gave these swaddlers another try at around five weeks, after feeling frustrated at how easily he woke himself up (sans any kind of swaddling), and was happy that they did help him sleep longer after all.

FOUR | Just Born Patchwork So Soft Blanket
We found that babies become attached to whatever blankets or toys you consistently put in their crib after they start to become more aware of their surroundings and things around them. With Evie, we picked up two of these blankets and used these with her almost exclusively, so it became her blankie. Since we had two, we were able to switch them out if needed for washing. We are doing the same with Parker - we picked up two of these blankets, though different colors than Evie's Evie's blanket is fairly gender neutral, whereas with Parker we picked out blue/green/grey ones. This is a popular blanket, because I've also seen a classmate of Evie's with one, and a co-worked of mine was gifted a pink and purple one when she had her daughter.

FIVE | Boon Lawn Countertop Drying Rack
I'd eyed this drying rack before we had Evie, but ultimately decided we didn't need it. Fast forward to a few months ago and a friend just so happened to gift this to us (after using and liking it herself), along with a twig accessory. I was like, yay! I could've gotten by without it like the first time, but it does work better in that things dry out faster on the rack than just a towel on the counter.

SIX | Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One
With Evie, I'd borrowed a Baby Bjorn carrier, but only used it a couple of times with Evie. I'd wanted to borrow it again this time around, but I broke down and just ended up buying our own (more like, Greg did the researching and buying, per the norm - heh). This carrier is different than the one that I used with Evie in that they added the functionality to convert this to a backpack style carrier for a toddler, so its useful life is longer. I've already used it daily with Parker - basically any time where he will get fussy if I put him down, I'll put him in this carrier, which allows me to effectively hold him while still having two hands free. I've also used it walking around at the mall (same thing, lets me have both hands free). I'm glad we got this given how much I've used it already.
