  • Visited his birthday twin (i.e., our friend who had her baby on the same day) last weekend.
  • Slept in his crib the whole night between Sunday and Monday. Progress! But that seems to have been a fluke, because it was not as good sleeping between Monday and Tuesday.
  • Received in the mail a baby quilt and hats from Greg's aunt, Flo. I'm a fan of them being handmade!
  • Had his two-and-a-half-week check-up at the pediatrician on Tuesday. He weighs over 10 lbs now.
  • Still had his umbilical stump as of his check-up, during which the doctor estimated another week or so before it fell off, after lifting it up and looking at it. I didn't know you could do that with the umbilical stump and I was afraid to do it myself. In any case, the doctor said we could clean underneath it a bit with alcohol, which Greg did Wednesday night. That may or may not have caused it to fall off on Thursday. :/ It's still healing some underneath.
  • Went for a walk around the neighborhood yesterday to get some exercise (for me, at least). He fell asleep on the walk, of course.
  • Unfortunately for the cats, especially Nina, they have to frequently share Greg's warm lap with Parker, Evie, or both.
  • I attribute it to the nursing, but I feel like I am constantly thirsty. Also, still waiting for that post-baby bump to go away . . . Ha.

Watercolor Stained Glass Effect Card

Last watercolor card, until I get the urge to do more!

On this card, I used 1/8-inch adhesive (Scrappy Tape, basically like Scor-Tape, but a bit cheaper) to make a geometric pattern, then pressed silver glitter onto the adhesive. Scrappy Tape is pretty sticky, so I've not had issues with glitter coming off of it once I've pressed it down into the tape firmly and shaken off the excess. After that, I watercolored each white space with a different color. The frame and "congrats" were cut with the Silhouette Cameo (the weld feature comes in handy).

Silver Feather Congrats Card

Only a couple more watercolor cards left!

Purple, blue, and gray watercoloring for the background of this card, which I cut into strips and flipped the middle piece in the other direction (kind of like a strip and flip quilt). I added white embossing with woodgrain background stamps and embossed the sentiment in silver. The feather was cut from silver cardstock using the Silhouette Cameo and mounted with foam adhesive for dimension.

Parker at 2 Weeks Old

Parker is two weeks old as of yesterday

Smiling while sleeping, but how knows why. Doesn't matter, because it's cute anyway.

Parker at 2 Weeks Old | shirley shirley bo birley Blog

  • Went through four sleepers in 24 hours last weekend. How does that even happen? Rhetorical question. Best I can tell, the diaper didn't keep it all in while he was laying down?
  • When I watch him sleeping after he nurses, the "I drink until I pass out" onesie comes to mind.
  • Still a lighter sleep in the wee hours of the morning (like 2:00 or 3:00am-ish to 7:00 or 8:00am-ish) than during the day. Great for getting stuff done during the day, bad for trying to sleep at night. We're trying to slowly switch his nights and days by encouraging more awake time during the day, but that's hard for a newborn who just wants to sleep.
  • Favored turning his head to his left, though it seems to have evened out some in the last several days. Evelyn did something like this when she was a baby too, though I can't remember which side. It was often enough that it was slightly noticeable which side she preferred because of the way the head was being shaped from lying down so much on that side. When I asked the pediatrician about it with Evie, he had me do some head exercises that forced her to stretch the muscles on the other side. I suspect I might have to do the same with Parker if he continues to favor one side.
  • So far, we've been able to do a divide-and-conquer approach with Evie and Parker, where I stay up with Parker in the middle of the night exclusively, while Greg drops off and picks up Evie from daycare during the week. On Monday though, daycare wasn't open due to it being a staff development day, so I really got the full mom-of-two experience with both Evie and Parker at home with me all day while Greg was at work. Evie got way more screen time than she probably should've . . .
  • Evie has been pretty helpful with putting the pacifier back in Parker's mouth if it falls out. One night during the week though, she was in the middle of eating dinner and had already got up to put the pacifier back in Parker's mouth when she was finally like, "Mama, will you help Baby Parker?" in a pretty authoritative tone. Greg had a good laugh over how she said it (it's funnier in person, I'm sure).
  • Gets the hiccups a lot, probably at least once or twice a day. And it seems to coincide with him laying on his back, so it happens fairly frequently when I'm trying to put him back to sleep in the crib at night. Then the hiccups wake him up just when I think there is a good chance I can get him back in the crib asleep in the middle of the night, and I'm like, Khaaannn!

Parker's Arrival

This is a little bit out of order, since I already posted about Parker at 1 week old, but Parker arrived a couple of weeks ago after a scheduled C-section.

Kids these days . . . they make their Internet debut within the first hour of being born! Not entirely sure if that is a good or bad thing in the long run, but in any case, this is the picture Greg posted to Facebook:

Parker's Arrival | shirley shirley bo birley Blog

THE STORY:

Since Evie was a C-section too (though unplanned), I had the option of doing a VBAC if it worked out, but my doctor recommended not going all the way until the due date because of increased risks (like uterine rupture - ouch). The C-section was only the week before my due date, so it really wasn't that early.

It was scheduled for 7:30 am and we were at the hospital being admitted by about 5:40 am. Once I got checked in, I waited in OB Triage where they hooked me up to monitors, put in an IV, and talked to the nurses and doctors about what to expect until it was time for me to go to the OR.

One of the unpleasant parts of the C-section with Evie was that I felt like I could still feel some pain from the incision as they were making it, but with Evie's C-section, it was an epidural versus this time around, where they gave me spinal anesthesia. The spinal anesthesia seemed to be much more effective - I felt no pain (yay), just pressure from them pushing/pulling. The worst part of the spinal anesthesia was actually the local anesthesia they inject first before they give you the actual spinal anesthesia. Also with Evie, I was wheeled into the OR because I was already on an epidural. This time, I walked myself to the OR, and they had me sit on the operating table to give me the spinal anesthesia, which worked really fast (I could feel my feet tingling within a couple minutes).

It felt a bit surreal laying in the OR throughout the whole process. Not that being in the OR wasn't a part of having Evie too, but we went to the hospital fairly well-rested this time around and it felt like the beginning of the journey rather than the culmination of hours at the hospital already, as it was with Evie.

I mentioned this in my Parker at 1 Week Old post already, but right after they pulled him out, before he got handed off to the nurses for clean up and vitals and such, the doctor popped him over the drape for a second to show him to me. I admit that I got a little bit teary-eyed when I saw him for the first time.

Parker was a big boy at 9 lbs, 10 oz, which was bigger than I expected, I would have pegged him to be closer to Evie's size, and only a week and a half before he came, the doctor's rough guess of his weight was around 7 lbs. My plan was to try a VBAC if he had come on his own before the 5th (which didn't happen), but after finding out how big he was, it was probably the right decision/fortunate that he ended up coming via a planned C-section. Given that Evie was already big-ish and didn't come out without intervention, it's very likely that I would have ended up with a C-section anyway, even if I could have tried the VBAC route.

After the OR, we were in the recovery room for a couple hours before moving to a regular room. I didn't feel like I was as out of it or thirsty this time, which was a good thing. A nurse in the recovery room also pointed out that Parker has a stork bite on his forehead (it's still there for now, though should be temporary).

Overall, the scheduled C-section seemed to be a better experience for us (aside from it being surgery while a VBAC isn't), given that we went into it without already being sleep deprived and it was better timing (first thing in the morning rather than later at night).

Green Monochromatic Watercolor Die Cut Card

I was inspired by this blue monochromatic ribbon card that I spotted a while ago on the American Crafts blog to make this card, only instead of ribbon, I watercolored three shades of green and die cut them using the Pinkfresh Studio brush stroke dies from the January 2015 kit. I then free-hand cut each brush stroke die cut in half to layer on the card.

Unfortunately for Parker, many of his observations are compare/contrast back to when Evie was a newborn . . . it's hard not to compare to the only other baby we've known! But I love him just the same.

  • I'm happy that he came out healthy. I didn't have any reason to think otherwise, but even more so with Evie, I felt like I was afraid that there are so many things that could go wrong with pregnancy, the baby developing, and all that, that when he came out, there was a bit of relief that all was as expected.
  • Right after they pulled him out, before he got handed off to the nurses for clean up and vitals and such, the doctor popped him over the drape for a second to show him to me. I admit that I got a little bit teary-eyed when I saw him for the first time.
  • He came out with a much fuller head of hair than Evie. I joked to Greg that he came out needing a hair cut.
  • He was a little bit of a giant coming out at 9 lbs 10 oz. We had a friend who, coincidentally, ended up having her baby on the same day as we did with Parker. Her experience sounded much worse though, even compared to what happened when we had Evie. She was fully dilated and pushing for several hours before her doctor called it, because the baby wouldn't fit, and she ended up with an emergency C-section. With a baby the size of Parker, that could have very well happened to me given that this friend is also of a more petite build. Yeesh. It's hard to know beyond speculating in retrospect, but the scheduled C-section was probably a good decision in this case.
  • Despite Parker being a bigger baby, I'd forgotten how little they are and that Evie was once this small. So cute. And the little feet and toes? I can't stand the cuteness.
  • Unlike Evie, he seems to be sticking more to the "all babies do is sleep, eat, and poop" type of baby that I seemed to hear about, but didn't experience as much with Evie as a newborn. Evie as a newborn wanted to be held, but it wasn't good enough just to be held while sitting, she wanted you to be moving around. Parker is content chillin' on a warm body, moving or not.
  • He doesn't seem to like sleeping in the crib. He sleeps decently in a place where he is snug (car seat, swing, bouncer), but sleeps the best when held (of course).
  • Overall, not bad at nursing (fortunately), but I feel like he has the most trouble with - or maybe is most impatient with - latching on, which then leads to being upset and fussiness (although I think even in the last couple days, it's improving). It's possible part of it is that we introduced a pacifier and also supplemented at first with formula before my milk came in, but we decided it was worth it to do both those things. Hopefully this is just a matter of him getting more used to both nursing and having a pacifier.
  • So far, he doesn't seem to have as much of the Moro reflex as I recall Evie having. Greg says he remembers this coming on later. I remember Evie, when she was being lowered into the crib, sticking her arms straight out like she was falling, which I haven't really seen so far with Parker.
  • I'm occasionally, fleetingly, a tiny bit sad that this is our last baby, but not sad about no more C-sections and sleep-deprived nights.

Heart Sequin Love Card

Greg and I aren't big on holidays, including Valentine's, but regardless, I felt in the mood to make this Valentine's-themed card using the January 2015 Pinkfresh Studio kit.

Using watercolors, I did three panels of blue (light, medium, and dark), which I used to back the brush stroke die cut negatives. The heart sequins were threaded through some string, and secured with glue dots. The sides of the card were lined with the ombre washi (in real life, I feel like the peach color of the washi tape looks closer to the colors of the heart sequins).

Valentine's Love Mini Banner

The current Pinkfresh Studio monthly kit includes love-themed circle die cut washi tape, which I decided to use the washi on a Valentine's-themed mini banner (nevermind that we don't actually decorate for any holiday except Christmas, and even that is minimal).

Each black panel is 2" x 3", with the blue panel layered over it measuring 1.75" x 2.75". In the clear stamp set that comes in the kit, there is a wreath with a heart in the middle. I wanted the wreath, but not the heart, so I took a knife and cut out the heart (it can still be used together later), then stamped the wreath on each panel in Picked Raspberry Distress ink. I also used part of the wand stamp to add some flourish to the top and bottom of the wreath. On eight of the panels, I added the circle die cut washi to the middle of the wreath. On the remaining four panels, I adhered letters spelling "love", which were cut with my Silhouette.

Snips & Snails & Puppy Dog Tails Layout

I have more watercolor cards that I made over the holidays to post, but I wanted to get this layout posted of when we had the anatomy ultrasound to find out whether Baby #2 was going to be a girl or boy. (Boy, if it wasn't obvious from the layout title).

Between the ultrasound photos that were cut into triangles, I used Pinkfresh Studio ombre washi, including one space where I did a bit of journaling. For the other spaces, I added a bunch of wood veneers.

When I first started scrapbooking, I would sometimes print out my layout journaling from the computer because I was such a perfectionist. I switched over to doing handwritten journaling for pretty much every layout because I felt like the handwriting is more meaningful looking back on layouts down the road, in a way that printed journaling just isn't. That also means I occasionally make mistakes when journaling, which I've learned to live with or figure out how to creatively fix.

Before I did the journaling on washi tape, I did some quick research on what kind of markers worked on washi tape without smearing (primarily this "Best means of writing on washi tape?" question on the Studio Calico forums) and the consensus was the American Crafts Slick Writers. I also found, after some quick Googling, this Writing on Washi Tape post comparing different pens and markers on washi tape that seems helpful.

Mint Ombre Watercolor and Copper Embossed Card

In December, Greg stealthily planned a babymoon for me to go on, except instead of going with him, he arranged for me to go with my friend, Stephanie. We stayed at the Westin Kierland, which is right across the street from Scottsdale Quarter, so of course we did some kid-free shopping there.

I picked up the Hero Arts Starburst Lace rubber stamp while at the Paper Source at Scottsdale Quarter and used it on this card - watercolored background (lighter in the middle, darker on the edges), stamped with VersaMark, and heat embossed with bronze powder. I also added a strip of bronze cardstock behind the watercolored background because it was feeling a bit bare.
